European Exchange

Safe Ground is currently taking part in a two year European exchange programme, sponsored by the European Commission as part of their Lifelong Learning Programme. As part of this initiative we are visiting our partner countries, Norway, Belgium, Denmark and Romania, to exchange best practice and learn how other they approach the rehabilitation and resettlement of offenders.

Following an eye-opening visit to Norway in November we were delighted to host the second partnership meeting in London in March 2010. During the 3 day event we introduced the delegates to the various ways that England is approaching resettlement. Not only did they visit HMP The Mount and HMP Belmarsh, where delegates took part in a Family Man lesson, they also visited other third sector organisations including Prison Advice and Care Trust, St Giles Trust and Only Connect Theatre Company.

The final output of the exchange will be a website that will demonstrate the learning of the programme and illustrate best practice. We are looking forward to visiting Belgium in 2010 and Romania in 2011.

We were really impressed with what we saw of Family Man, the Only Connect theatre company, Pact (visiting centres) and St Giles. HMP the Mount also appeared to have much to offer inmates. – Overall, we got a lot of useful information about  the prison system in the UK/Britain” The Norwegian’s evaluate their visit to London
