Family Relationships in Prison

HMP Parc in Wales are in the process of expanding their scheme whereby inmates can keep track of their children’s progress in school, helping the maintenance of family relationships. Following this news, The Guardian asked their readers about their experiences of having family members in prison. In a recent article, these readers discuss how they felt when their parent was imprisoned, and the impact this had on their childhood and family relationship.
One reader said “no interventions were made to support my relationship with my mother or my siblings and things have never improved”, demonstrating the importance of intervention work in maintaining family relationships throughout incarceration. Safe Ground’s Family Man programme focuses on maintaining and developing family relationships, whilst Fathers Inside is a parenting programme.
